COP (Coefficient of Performance) is how many units of heating or cooling you get out for every 1 unit of electricity the heat pump uses. A COP of 4 means 4 kWh of heat for 1 kWh of power — the extra 3 come for free from the ground. Higher is better.
A conventional gas/electric boiler is effectively COP ≈ 1 (or less), so even a "fair" geothermal value is far more efficient. Cooling COP is often very high (10+) because passive cooling mostly just moves the ground's coolness inside.
